A battery stores energy. A good system creates flexibility.
Storage and AI-enabled controls can support more responsive energy operations, provided the design follows a clear commercial use case.
Sector briefing · Retrospective edition prepared September 2026
The evidence
The IEA reported lithium-ion battery prices falling from about US$1,400/kWh in 2010 to below US$140/kWh in 2023. These battery price figures are not turnkey BESS project prices; power conversion, controls, installation, safety systems and operating costs remain additional considerations.
The business implication
Commercial customers may use storage to manage peaks, improve the usefulness of onsite generation or support defined continuity needs. AI-enabled forecasts and dispatch tools can help coordinate these tasks. Benefits depend on tariffs, duty cycles, degradation, system availability and the limits placed on dispatch.
What leaders should examine
State the priority use case and test it against actual load data. Model usable capacity across the operating term, including augmentation and replacement assumptions. Clarify the division between automated controls and operator authority. Safety, emergency procedures and maintenance competence belong in the commercial decision from the beginning.
Is the system being sized for a measurable operating need, or simply for an attractive nameplate capacity?
