The evidence
The IFR recorded 542,000 industrial-robot installations in 2024 and an operational stock of 4.664 million units. These figures describe industrial robots; they are not humanoid deployment figures. They offer a useful benchmark for the mature automation systems against which new robotic formats compete.
The business implication
Humanoid systems promise to work in environments designed for people. That flexibility matters in mixed-task logistics and manufacturing, but it also increases the number of operating conditions that must be tested. A demonstration does not establish uptime, maintenance burden, safety performance or the ability to recover from an unexpected event.
What leaders should examine
Evaluate a narrowly defined task before committing to a fleet. Compare the proposed robot with conventional automation and an improved manual process. Require evidence on successful task completion, interventions per shift, service response, spares and total operating cost. Structure a pilot with acceptance criteria and a practical exit.
Is a human-shaped machine necessary for this task, or is the business really buying reliable automation?
