Artificial intelligence · 2025-10

AI has entered the enterprise. Value still has to be earned.

The next competitive advantage is organisational: choosing the right workflow, redesigning it well and measuring what improves.

Sector briefing · Retrospective edition prepared September 2026

78%of surveyed organisations reported using AI in 2024

The evidence

Stanford’s 2025 AI Index reported AI use at 78% of surveyed organisations in 2024, up from 55% in 2023. Private generative-AI investment reached US$33.9 billion in 2024. These are adoption and funding indicators, not proof of returns for individual businesses.

The business implication

For family enterprises and privately held companies, accessible AI tools can shorten document review, improve customer-service routing and support commercial analysis. The larger challenge is integrating these tools into the way work is authorised, checked and completed. A pilot that produces impressive demonstrations but creates extra review work may add cost.

What leaders should examine

Start with one repeatable process and an accountable business owner. Record its current cycle time, exception rate and cost per completed task. Test against that baseline, including human review and integration costs. Keep commercially sensitive information within approved systems and establish an escalation route for uncertain outputs.

Which workflow would still justify the project if the novelty disappeared tomorrow?
